HOME SWEET HOME

We leave echoes of ourselves behind.

Homes are sometimes owned, mortgaged, rented, inherited, auctioned, for sale, ruined or demolished. The contents of a home mirror the occupants. New occupants bring their contents and accept or change what was left behind. Fragments of wallpapers become time capsules and ghostly reminders of where framed pictures once hung. Home are sometimes full of people, dogs, cats, birds, mice and sometime empty. A home provides privacy and shelter from storms. Sometimes doors and windows are drafty and the roof leaks.

Sometimes there is a knock on the door or a bell rings announcing a stranger or friend. Sometimes guest are welcomed and other times not. A home is where you say good morning, read books, listen to music, enjoy the fireplace and say good night. A home has stories to tell that are sometimes true, made up or just funny. Homes are where you mourn the loss of a loved one. A home has family treasures displayed in the living room or stored in the attic. The lives of people are like buildings they come and go and few remember who once lived there.

The three artworks Home Sweet Home document moments in time when playing outdoors could be scary, when books full of knowledge now keep a window open during the summer, or a toy bear and empty flower pots tell of a life once lived.

I believe we leave echoes of ourselves behind, in those rooms where our lives are first defined.” —Michaels, Duane. The House I Once Called Home, Enitharmon Editions, London, England, 2003.

MARY, MARY QUITE CONTRARY HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROWMEDIUM:
Assemblage, collage, wallpaper, photo-letter fragments, doll house window, fabric, ceramic flower pots, acrylic paint, dollhouse window.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
At the age of 80 years I have lived in 11 rented apartments, resided in 4 homes, and 8 different towns all within 3 states. All of the structures mentioned have been occupied by an incalculable number of tenants or  owners.

My three Home Sweet Home art assemblages portray the lives of people (actual or fictional) who have occupied the same home and room over time. The wallpapered wall is testimony to the fashion choices made and how with aging the once hanging pictures and mirror echo once valued objects.

The photographs with writing are by people who once occupied this room with different interests and concerns are evident by the found archeological objects. This quote by Duane Michaels, “I believe we leave echoes of ourselves behind, in those rooms where our lives are first defined,” best describes how our lives and time moves on. Rober Hauser, 1942-  )
